What is the connection between country music and the confederate flag?

I am black and I like country music. I have noticed that when I go to a country music festival, even in northern states, the confederate flag is not only present, but heavily advertised. While I would expect to see the confederate flag in southern states, I don't get why it is flown in northern states. Would someone please explain this to me?
