What is going on? Is my boyfriend being a selfish jerk or is this just typical in relationships?

Well we have been dating for a year now, he was very nice and interested in my future when i first met him but even after the first date i noticed he could be tight with money, like obviously not wanting to pay for my breakfast on our second date. I soon found out this was because all the exes use to make him pay for things, well this is what he says and he is saving for a house. I honestly felt bad, but being a student, i dont always have cash on me so i just couldnt pay for breakfast. Now since then this then he has paid for a fair few lunches and dinners etc, but everytime i receive my allowance for studying i try and buy him as many lunches and dinners as i possibly can aswell. He earns the same amount i earn fortnight in a day. A few times he has told me about the romantic things he has done with exes and what he has bought them etc. And i usually annoyed ask why he has done anything as romantic for me except for a nice skirt or top now and then every couple of months. He has told me it is because i am studyin and dont have the money to spend aswell, so when i start earning more money from a job that is when he will start spending on me. He also says that he is paying for our living, which is a lie, coz all he does is give his mother 50 a week for staying at her house, meals, electricity etc and so do I. So i spend all my money on us regurlarly and he spends about a days wages on us and banks the rest. Other things are we have almost broken up twice because he wants to have and i dont, i would rather save it for marriage, but now i have just given up coz he gives me a hell of a time about it. He is always asking me to do stuff for him. We always do what he wants to do. If we go to video shop he always picks most of the movies, even when i pay, i let him pick most of them coz he gets pouty and i feel guilty. He told me he wanted to marry me around the last time we broke up, was very serious about it, now whenever i talk about marriage, he just ignores it. And has said whats the rush, even though he knows how important it is to me with my beliefs. He goes on and on about his day, and will let me talk about mine, when he not so tired and busy from work. But i dont think he enjoys listening to me most of the time coz he once told me that what i say is boring and that i go on a bit. He is always fretting about his looks and and does flirt with other girls, exspecially give them long perves. But then everytime i try to be distant from him coz he's got me mad, he just acts like a sweet lovable puppy dog and be's attentive and caring for a little while and then it goes again. He once told me that i wasnt affectionate enough to him, so now i try and be very affectionate. But he doesnt return the favour, only if i am upset at him. Anyway i could go on and on, but i just want an outsiders point of view. Whatever it may be.
