My Friend is from the north, why does he fly the confederate flag?

I have a friend that lives in New York, he always lived in new york his whole life, but he has a southern accent, and he flies the confederate flag. He is not racist i know that for a FACT. Why does he fly the confederate flag? Since hes from the north not south why does he fly it?
